Retrato hablado by Juan Villoro
Stage director: Arturo Beristain
Artistic director: Enrique Singer
Retrato hablado is a play by Juan Villoro, and directed by Arturo Beristáin, in which the texts by the poet Ramón López Velarde are brought back. This happens during a conversation while two of his students, Matilde Toranzo and Dolores Baeza, wait for the poet to celebrate his 33rd birthday and do his portrait. While they are waiting for him, Dolores and Matilde bring him to their presence by remembering him through his work. The poet is and is not present; his spirit is there, his soul, as a ghost… The portrait will be a spoken portrait, since he dies on the same day, which stops him from being physically present at the appointment. Velarde visits them secretly to talk about his motivations as a writer in a scene that is inhabited in his memory.
