Curious fact:

Mama África

Woman, black, single mother, poor… this is Mama Africa by Chico Cesar, one of the composer's most popular songs. The internationally acclaimed melody speaks of a woman who is like thousands of Brazilian women: An Afro-descendant woman who works in a popular store (Casas Bahia) working as packer, assistant while doing household chores. A woman who only has her own labor force.

It is known that black single mothers are some of the groups paid the lowest wages in the country. Even though the world is not kind to Mama Africa, the singer-songwriter's music is not a whimper, nor a claim, it is a song that shows strength and gentleness despite the difficulties that life may present.

The Paraiban folklore of Chico Cesar's music

Chico Cesar was born in Paraíba, one of the twenty-six states that, together with the federal district, form the Federative Republic of Brazil. It is a state rich in folkloric traditions that manifest in dances, festivals, plays and other forms that the popular imagination has preserved for hundreds of years and that are part of a unique legacy of Brazilian identity. The Paraiban folklore, which is taught in schools and universities, impresses with its richness of colors and rhythms; it portrays the soul of a people that knew how to overcome adversities and make life a reason for joy. All this love of origin and tradition can be perceived in the music composed and performed by Chico Cesar, which is the reason why he is the favorite of the best performers in Brazil.

“He is compared with Caetano Veloso, because of the poetic load of his songs and his warm voice, but Chico César’s musical experimentation goes beyond that. In his last works he has assimilated and fused rhythms from different cultures up to the point of getting a more eclectic and risky sound that is beginning to gather momentum in Europe.”

EL TIEMPO

“Chico is a tracker -a professional deformation from his previous job as a journalistand an amplifier of what is emerging in popular culture. His antenna immediately captures the shifts of tradition into modernity.”

LA NACIÒN

“His music seems to have come out of a cocktail shaker in which all the ingredients are allowed: African roots, the folklore of the northeastbossa, samba, reggae, pop, rock, funk, among others, and on the edge of the glass, a slice of tropicalism.”
