One of the quintessential comedies of errors of Spanish-American theater: “Los empeños de una casa”, written by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and premiered in 1683, narrates the misfortune of two couples in love who, due to fate, cannot be together. Confusion, jealousy and secrecy are all part of this story, marked with the characteristic style of the Luz del Norte Theater Group without losing the humor and lyricism of Sor Juana. Although the text was created more than three hundred years ago, the audience's interest is easily captivated by its fast pace, the beauty of the poetic language, and the entanglements between lovers who mistake one another in the dark.

Curious fact:

Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz is considered the most iconic writer of the Golden Age period of Nueva España, now Mexico. The Tenth Muse, as she is also called, was a religious woman who learned to read and write at the age of three; a prodigy who defended knowledge and learning as the foundations of human development. She wrote theater, prose and, most of all, lyric poetry. In many of her poems, heartbreak permeates as a central theme, as well as the integrity of courage and virtue. It should be noted that she was a master in the art of the sonnet and the baroque style. According to her own writings, all her works were commissioned except for "Primero sueño”, considered her most important poetic work, where she recounts the process involved in the sleeping and dreaming of human beings and nature, until it ends with the awakening of the senses and the triumph of day over night. “Los empeños de una casa” was presented for the first time in October 4, 1683, to celebrate the birth of the son of the viceroy Count of Paredes.
