Steel Band de El Cobre

Pailas para bailar

Dir. Hermes Ramírez Silva

With a marimba-like sound, the Steel Band of El Cobre has become famous for playing in huge steel vessels. They are the steelpans, a kind of metal drums from Trinity and Tobago, but that in Cuban hands resonate with a syncopated cadence.

Their repertoire can include the works of famous composers and interpreters, such as Bob Marley, Chucho Valdés, Michael Jackson, Juan Formell and even Schubert.

To carry on the legacy of the Steel Band, a children's band was founded in 2007, which will keep the most Caribbean of bands alive.

Curious fact:

El Cobre, Santiago de Cuba, Cuba

El Cobre is a town in the municipality of Santiago de Cuba. It was the site of intense mining activity that ceased at the beginning of the millennium. Famous for its copper mine, this community, which was originally made up of slaves, freed itself from the Spanish crown 80 years before slavery was abolished in the world. It is a territory with mountainous reliefs and a humid tropical climate; the inhabitants are mostly farmers, public servants, health workers and cattle feeders. The story tells that the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, the patron saint of Cuba, appeared here.

Steel Band:

This is the name given to musical groups whose main instruments are metal drums similar to a barrel or tank drums, which are very popular in Trinidad and Tobago and now also in the Caribbean. Nowadays, these bands are relevant in orchestras of Caribbean countries, especially during festivals and carnivals.

Paila:

It is a percussion instrument known as timbal that is composed of two metal drums in the shape of cylinders, with a top drumhead on each one. It is usually accompanied by cowbells. They are normally used in Latin music such as salsa and cumbia.

“The Steel Band has something in their sound that is really seductive, and because of the harmony in their touch you get the feeling you’re in the Caribbean, even if you live in a nation from the area, like Cuba. You never feel more Caribbean than when you hear this music.”

José Roberto Loo. CIBERCUBA

“No one in their right mind would imagine that by hitting a hollow steel tank, the metal would give back a harmonic and pleasant sound. But those who have listened to the Steel Band of El Cobre know that this is more than possible.”

CUBA SÍ

“With a fructiferous work registered for 30 years since its creation, the Steel Band of El Cobre is already presenting its credentials on the musical taste of the Cubans. Particularly among outstanding interpreters of the country, who acknowledge the singularity of that marimba-like timbre, which is extracted with a perfect tuning by the members from their instruments formed by metallic vessels.”
