Los niños del mezquite

Book presentation and workshop

Author: Quitzé Fernández

Workshop director: Alberto Tovar

Quitzé Fernández, author of Los niños del mezquite, transports us to the past with this story in which Jamé, a cuachichil girl from northeastern Mexico, becomes our eyes. Through her eyes we will become aware of the life of nomadic children like her, their food, games and traditions; the work of their parents, hunting, picking food and that special moment when grandparents gave their grandchildren a bow made of mesquite to teach them how to hunt their food. Illustrated by Carlos Vélez, this book seeks to bring children closer to their roots with the purpose of preserving the memory of ethnic groups that inhabited these lands.

Born in Torreón, Coahuila in 1982 he has written several books, including La mujer que encontró dinosaurios en su casa (The woman who found dinosaurs in her house) and Canto de ...

Curious fact:

The Cuachichiles or Guachichiles were a Mexican nomadic ethnic group of great territorial extension among all the Chichimeca peoples, they spoke a tongue that nowadays is extinct and probably belonged to the Corachol family part of the Uto-Aztec languages.

The mesquite is a species of leguminous plants that inhabits the arid and semi-arid zones of Mexico, the tree can reach 6 to 9 meters in height, although they are also found as bushes. The wood of the mesquite is hard, so furniture and implements can be made from it. It is also used as firewood because it burns slowly and is widely used for preparing barbacoa (meat wrapped in leaves cooked underground over a slow fire with firewood) and grilled meat. Its seeds are used to produce flour, jam and wine and the leaves in infusion are a remedy for eye diseases.

"It was written with great fondness for the girls and boys of Coahuila, the history of our ancestors is narrated with very striking illustrations. We hope you enjoy it very much, since you will get to know who our ancestors were. Enjoy the book and read it in family.
